- Project / Program Description
Worcester Energy Access is a novel partnership between the grassroots community base of Worcester Community Energy Action (WCEA) and mission-oriented solar developers to bring reduced-cost clean energy to nonprofit organizations serving primarily immigrant and low-income residents in Worcester, MA. We propose to install 250 kw of solar electric capacity through PPAs on the property of 10 or more nonprofit organizations by October 31, 2018, enabling at least $10,000 in savings over one year of solar operation. Our team includes Co-op Power, a regional energy co-operative with substantial project development experience, Resonant Energy, with expertise in solar project design, Worcester Community Energy Action, a grassroots organization with a track record organizing for energy justice in LMI and immigrant communities, and Worcester Interfaith, a multi-issue, multi-race community organization building bridges between congregational and community leaders. Indirect benefits include solar education and technical assistance for Worcester nonprofits; community building through collective meetings and celebration; education and awareness-raising about the benefits of clean energy among LMI residents served by participating non-profits; capacity building for partner organizations to help more nonprofits; growing membership in WCEA, providing experience and training in the solar energy industry and laying the groundwork for creating pathways out of poverty; engagement of municipal and other officials in efforts to promote regional clean energy potential.
